Mississauga City Council is currently considering a motion to ban the sale, possession, and use of all consumer fireworks citywide, effective as early as January 2, 2026. INsauga  While safety and noise concerns are real, a sweeping prohibition is overly restrictive, undermining our ability to celebrate responsibly, compromising cultural expression, and imposing costs on residents with no guarantee of better outcomes.

We, the undersigned, respectfully ask Council to reject the proposed full ban and instead adopt a more balanced approach that preserves the right to celebrate—while protecting public safety and community peace. Specifically, we call on Council to:

  1. Allow fireworks on designated cultural and national holidays (e.g. Diwali, Canada Day, Lunar New Year, New Year’s Eve) under reasonable regulations;

  2. Retain regulated sales and licensing, including safety requirements, restricted hours, and permitted vendors;

  3. Strengthen enforcement and public education rather than criminalize all fireworks use;

  4. Permit organized community or religious displays under permit and oversight, ensuring public safety and mitigating nuisance.

By signing this petition, you affirm your support for responsible celebration, cultural inclusion, and fair regulation. We urge Council to listen to residents before deciding on a prohibition that would silence traditions many hold dear.
