Protect Our Kids — Support Speed Cameras Ontario
Every year, children in Ontario are at risk on the roads around their schools, playgrounds, and neighbourhoods. Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) — also known as speed cameras in school zones and community safety zones — has proven to be a critical safety measure that slows dangerous drivers, reduces collisions, and saves lives.
The provincial government has recently announced plans to introduce legislation that would ban municipal ASE cameras across Ontario, removing this vital tool from communities. Many municipal leaders, police chiefs, and road safety advocates warn that this ban would reverse years of progress in protecting children and increase pressure on already stretched policing resources.
We, the undersigned, call on the provincial government and our elected representatives to stop this ban and instead commit to strengthening ASE in conjunction with other safety measures. Specifically, we demand:
- Retain ASE tools in school zones and community safety zones, where they demonstrably reduce speeding and crashes.
- Protect municipalities’ authority to deploy ASE under clear and fair standards.
- Increase transparency and fairness in operation (e.g. clear signage, review mechanisms, calibration standards).
- Pledge investment in complementary road safety infrastructure (e.g. crosswalks, traffic calming, safe route planning), not removal of proven tools.
By signing this petition, you affirm your support for keeping Ontario’s roads safer for children, pedestrians, cyclists, and all residents — not trading safety for political optics.
