For residents looking to cross Terry Fox Way to use Sonoma Park or the Carolyn Creek trail it is risky. There is a sizable distance to the nearest signalized intersection offering safe crossing and Terry Fox Way is a wide, busy street. It has become a preferred route for drivers avoiding the more congested Mavis Rd nearby.
To safely cross from Sonoma Park to the Carolyn Creek trail the nearest set of traffic lights requires a 10-minute walk (750 meters) to Bristol Road then back to Carolyn Creek trail. This forces pedestrians to choose between a long detour or a dangerous crossing on a street where cars travel fast.
A signalized crosswalk — one that uses regular red-yellow-green traffic lights activated by a pedestrian push-button — is urgently needed at this location.
We, the undersigned, call on the City of Mississauga to install a signalized pedestrian crossing at Terry Fox Way near the Carolyn Creek Trail and Sonoma Park. This crosswalk will make the neighbourhood safer and more accessible for everyone.
Specifically, we request that the City:
- Prioritize the installation of a full signalized crosswalk that halts traffic with a red light when activated.
- Ensure the design supports accessibility for people with disabilities, seniors, and families with strollers.
- Study to make sure that the location of the crosswalk is in the location that best optimizes safety and pedestrian access between the park and Carolyn Creek trail.
